2011 Indiana State Fair

IGIC has been invited back by the Boy Scouts of America and the Indiana State Fair to offer a series of activities at the Indiana State Fair August 5-21, 2011

The IGIC tent will again be in the Legacy Camp Area next to the Boy Scout Bridge, on the northeast side of the fairgrounds. Daily events planned for the IGIC Tent in 2011 include:

  • State Fair Orienteering Map Activity
  • Map Displays and Games in the IGIC Tent
  • Scout craft geospatial demonstration/education sessions on the weekends
  • IndianaMap Kiosk in the Normandy Barn


  • GIS for Indiana

    On August 17th, IGIC presented a series of high-energy, 5-minute presentations spotlighting GIS initiatives for Indiana. Presenters included Jim Sparks, State of Indiana Geographic Information Officer, Phil Worrall, IGIC Executive Director, and others who highlighted and demonstrated the latest in GIS advances in the State of Indiana.     IndianaMap Kiosk

    The Indiana State Fair Education Director Justin Armstrong is again providing IGIC with the opportunity to demonstrate GIS and IndianaMap data on a touch screen kiosk located inside the Normandy Barn. Our kiosk was a great success last year, and Rick Hill and his staff at the Indiana Geological Survey will deploy a NEW custom Esri ArcGIS Server 10 Silverlight application this year using the new IndianaMap R3 viewer data and technology.


    Boy Scout Merit Badge Activities

    New for this year, IGIC volunteers will also present geospatial training sessions on the weekends to support the following Scout Craft Merit Badge requirements:

    1. Orienteering – Working with a Compass (Workshop that teaches the skills necessary to complete requirements 2 and 3)
    2. Orienteering – Using a Topographic Map (Workshop that teaches the skills necessary to complete requirement 4)
    3. Orienteering – Setting up a 100-meter Pace Course (Workshop that teaches the skills necessary to complete requirement 5)
    4. Geology - Geologic Maps (Workshop that teaches the skills necessary to complete requirements 1, 2, 3, and 4a)
    5. Geocaching – Using GPS (Workshop that teaches the skills necessary to complete requirement 4)
    6. Geocaching & Surveying – Finding and Recovering Survey Monuments (ISPLS workshop that teaches the skills necessary to use Geocaching methods to participate in Indiana monument recovery efforts)
    7. Surveying – Introduction to Modern Land Surveying Methods and Technology (ISPLS workshop)

    Scouts that complete these activities will earn partial credit toward their merit badge requirements. All these events will take place in the IGIC tent located in the BSA Legacy Camp. CLICK HERE for schedule information.
