By: John C. Steinmetz, Ph.D., Director and State Geologist, Indiana Geological Survey
The Indiana Geological Survey’s own Kim Sowder was notified yesterday afternoon by Provost Karen Hanson that she was named this year’s recipient of the Staff Merit Award in the Support Staff category. We are most proud of Kim’s recognition in the campus-wide competition, for it is well deserved.
Kim has been a full-time employee of the Geological Survey since 1984. In her present capacity, she serves at the Cartographic Coordinator in the Geological Survey’s Information Technology Section, overseeing a staff of graphic artists and cartographers.
In addition to her fine work in the complex and ever changing fields of graphics and cartography, she also gives generous amounts of her own time and considerable abilities in outreach, thereby extending one of the key elements of the mission of the Geological Survey. In recent years, Kim has volunteered her time to contribute her knowledge and skills in mentoring high school students for the Science Olympiad and the Bloomington South High School Band Program. Additionally she plays a very active role in contributing to the success of the annual meeting of the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Incorporated, or HASTI.
In a similar capacity, Kim facilitates collaboration between the Geological Survey and other Indiana University Bloomington Campus groups including the Alumni Association, the Math Program, and the Department of Geological Sciences. Kim also works with non-IU groups very effectively. In the recent past, Kim has served on the steering committee for the National Minerals Education Conference, and she has assisted with the annual conference of the Indiana Society of Mining and Reclamation, the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association, the Alliance of Bloomington Museums, GEOFEST at the Indiana State Museum, and she has provided graphics and creative ideas for many worthy causes. [Kim also serves on the Indiana Geographic Information Council’s Conference Committee and our IU Bloomington GIS Day committee.]
Finally, she always excels at her chosen profession within the Indiana Geological Survey, cheerfully and effectively managing numerous and diverse projects that are always needed “yesterday.” In all instances, she always remains cooperative, creative, and well-centered. One can always depend upon Kim to get the job finished and in great order.
Kim Sowder has shown the dedication, work ethic, spirit of volunteerism, and extraordinary performance that exemplify her citizenship in the IU Community.
The Indiana Geological Survey is proud to have her among its ranks. Congratulations, Kim!
