Huntingburg wanted to collect accurate positional data and detailed information for each of the electric utility poles that it maintains within the City of Huntingburg Electric Utility Distribution System. GPS was employed to locate and update an inventory of approximately 4,000 electric utility poles. Data collected about each pole included: the geospatial location, electric pole tag number, year of manufacture, height, classification, number and size of transformers, type and wattage of street lights, and the electrical circuit the pole is located on. Additionally, a photo of each pole was taken. This database allows for rapid disaster response in the case of power outages and faster restoration of power to customers.
